Skardu rewards a little planning. The two big decisions are how you get there and how long you stay.

By road, expect two long but scenic days along the Karakoram Highway from Lahore or Islamabad. By air, Islamabad–Skardu flights take under an hour but are weather-dependent — always keep a road backup.

Five to six days is the sweet spot: enough for Shangrila and Upper Kachura lakes, the Katpana cold desert, Shigar Fort, and a Deosai day trip in summer.
